Optimist's Daughter (Impedimenta)

Title: Optimist's Daughter
Author: Eudora Welty
Year: 1972
Edition: Impedimenta, Madrid 2009
Pulitzer Prize in 1973 novel

McKelva Judge Clint had a small accident in one eye and the doctor says you have to operate. It seems a little thing, but something goes wrong and you die slowly. His daughter, Laurel, who has moved from Chicago to New Orleans to be with his father, returned to Mount Salus to Fay, the second wife horripenda the judge (the first, Becky, died) and the coffin, for the wake, funeral and burial. And there was tension in the judge's life had been only latent McKelva: what looks Fay in Mount Salus?, Stress peaks in the last encounter between Fay and Laurel.

is common to see Eudora Welty in the same group of Southern authors who William Faulkner, Carson McCullers , Tennessee Williams, Flannery O'Connor , etc. I've only read some of F. O'Connor, with whom the shares Welty grotesques (the family of Fay is fireworks), the atmosphere oppressive and sad, and a general tone that, lack of a single word, describe as a tone that causes you the feeling that in the next paragraph may occur somewhat disturbing, or macabre, or fantastic, or unhealthy, or irrational, or rare, o. .. Sorry I can not be more specific. Anyone who has read some of these people know what I mean. Optimist's Daughter is not a book for those who are willing to have a hole to get to read it but if you're with him you are very comfortable (I'm cryptic look today, right?). I must admit that at some point I had invaded the feeling of having lost the thread of the narrative, if not the style of the author or the translation. Except for this, but a good read, yes, good and challenging, not suitable for "casual readers."

Any other day (RBA)

Title: Any other day
Author: Dennis Lehane
Edition: RBA, Barcelona 2010

Set in the U.S., Any other day recreates the police strike was place in Boston in 1919, the months before and street riots that accompanied it. Around this real fact, unusual in the country, Lehane tells a lot about those turbulent years, in which one of the worst things that could hap is being labeled as "Bolshevik" the rise of the labor movement, anarchist terrorism, the end of the Irish hegemony, racism still fierce, all in a country mired in an economic crisis and out of the Great War. Good

novel. And ambitious. Any other day is assembled on three characters: Babe Ruth , a legendary baseball player for the Red Sox, Luther Laurence, a black man that things are not going at all well, and Danny Coughlin, Boston Police . Following the three, especially Luther and Danny Lehane is marked more than 700 pages full of human conflict ... painful decisions, and corruption, shooting, bombings, bands, murders, brutal fights ... A curious mixture of thriller and historical novels, sometimes hard, sordid and crude, but not unpleasant. As if that tells you something, a tip: Lehane is the author of three novels made into films, Gone Baby Gone (Gone, Baby, Gone) , Mystic River and Shutter Island , and the script of three chapters series The Wire (2004, episode 3.03, Dead Soldiers, 2006, episode 4.04, Refugees, 2008, episode 5.08, Clarifications ).

Huge Block Of Foam For Carving

December 24 (how far left and Christmas, right?), Ignacio Arellano, the author of The classic garden , I left a comment in the entry devoted to his book : I appreciated what it said and gave me the address of a blog which continues to publish reviews. I promised that I would devote an entry and it would link, but with the emotion of the moment-not always an author visit, and had just begun to spruce up for dinner I went. Today I agreed and here I am fulfilling my word. The address is: jardindelosclasicos.blogspot.com . Enjoy it, sure gives you ideas for further reading.

Second Meeting promises navigation. Memoirs 2 (Ediciones Encuentro) Balance readings

Title: Second navigation. Memories 2
Author: Alejandro Llano
Edition: Ediciones Encuentro, Madrid 2010

I'm not very fond of biographies and similar genres, so when the first volume of memoirs Alejandro Llano, smell of dry grass , I did too much attention, despite the lovely title and know the character. When he left the second volume, navigation Second, my sister Angela , the bookseller, insisted that he read it. I acquired the habit of heeding and, again, did well.

say those who have read both , this second part is a memoir of a more intellectual and spiritual. It's true. Llano presented in this book many of their theses on topics such as college and how bad it combines with Bolognese sauce , the consequences of the abandonment of metaphysics, civic humanism as an outlet to the current social crisis and politics, the relationship between faith and reason ... and sometimes it seems that stretches a little. So someone may get bored at some point. But the book is at once full of anecdotes, many amusing, as the author, told with simplicity surprising about his love of mountains and reading (defined as a letraherido, fantastic word that did not know), their publications, their friends and teachers, about his years as chancellor of the University of Navarra and bombings put them on a long depression, ... For those who know the teacher Llano, Second navigation is almost required reading. For anyone with intellectual or cultural concerns, is a worthwhile read from which you can learn a lot. For the rest, Second navigation is not a good birthday (not kings). Here collected from an interview where word a lot of things written in the book .

Street Value 5mg Valium

2010

As promised in the previous post, ecco reading my balance last year. First some statistics:
  • Books read this year: 45, more or less as in 2009. Too. Anyway, the important point would be to read pages, because much of what I read are novels, short of 100-200 pages.
  • By country takes the cake United Kingdom (12), followed by Spain (11). When you count me surprised that there is little U.S. (5) and much of Ireland (4), although the latter is due to an attack connollymanía . As always, a little French (1) and no Hispanic or German (this is not right).
The best readings of the year have been Eleanor of Aquitaine, Road, The garden of classical and The reverse of the frame . Hereogénea quite the thing, right? Close to these have been Flee fast, go far , Death of Ivan Ilyich , What Mary in his heart , In safe , All that dies , nemesis, Dracula , The Crypt of the Capuchins and The Laughing Policeman .

Within the sad category of "books that are sure to burn well, this year's Providence has taken care of me and I can only mention two: The distant land of ponds and Turkish Gambit.

And finally, readers for making 2011:
  1. Read less and do more sport. Ja! Read less
  2. and police thriller more authors of "serious, more French , Hispanic and Central . And keep trying to poetry.

in the clouds (Anagram)

Title: In the clouds
Author: Ian McEwan
Year: 1994
Edition: Anagram, Barcelona 2007

Peter Fortune is a child who spends day in the clouds. Well, that's what I think the elderly. In fact, Peter is not in the clouds, is having the time in struggling with a large doll sister who suddenly comes to life, fighting with other cats after exchanging your body with William, the old family cat, wiping out his parents and sister with a cream discovers "mixed bag" of the kitchen of his home ... A Peter as an adult, inventor and writer of short stories, tells some of those adventures that occurred in his head.

In the clouds is a very funny book, a joy to read for both young and old. In my opinion, the best chapters are ... (pause for thought, for review) ... The truth is that everyone liked me. The things that you have read Ian McEwan you will be surprised by the change of registration and confirmaréis what you knew already: that McEwan type of fear. And sure rememoraréis episodes of childhood: who has not played with imagination and has had a great time? And recommended a short novel, useful to recover the last melodrama you've read.
